I am officially dumber than I thought I was

No I didn't manage to set the kitchen on fire again (thank god!) but I did something equally as idiotic...I took a Mensa test.

Yes that's correct, me the person who has forgotten how to spell half the time, and is truely math phobic, tried to take a test that only the most qualified 2% of the world can pass. Okay so it was a practice test, but still. I scored an 18 out of 30, which in Mensa speak is "You scored a little low, but you might be able to pass the Mensa test" and then maniacal laughter follows. Okay so there wasn't really a laugh track but I can see the normal body/big head people falling out of thier chairs at that score.

Trying to redeem myself I took another test for smart people that are dumber than the Mensa folks, that was a slightly better 117, but still a far cry from the last IQ test I took in middle school, that one was a 139. Got me into the gifted program, even though I was technically 1 point shy of the goal. The person administrating the test racked that point loss up to the fact I was a complete nervous wreck while taking it, shaking and almost messing my pants. I was eternally grateful for the extra time getting to play Oregon Trail during the hour a week meeting time :)

Back at the time I took that test I had the common sense of a dead flea...okay maybe a live flea, but a flea non the less. In my advanced age I will try and comfort myself with the belief that you can only have one kind of "smarts". Either you can find your way out of a paper bag, or you can boggle the masses with your ability to figure out complex equations beginning with "Two trains leave the station...". Personally I find that having common sense works better most of the time, as long as I don't have to do math homework...

Yeah you know, I can just see the 'next generation' of these tests. They will replace the 'two trains leave the station' with something like.

'2 guys are downloading music from iTunes. One is on a 3 megabit cable modem, and the other on dialup...'

I wouldn't let it get to you too much. Like you said, there are a lot of things those tests don't account for. You and I have already discussed some of the things that I'm dumber than a box of rocks on, but you can just figure it out, smile mischeviously, and be on your way. Don't sweat it kid.

Forgot to mention: Oregon Trail kicked all kinds of butt.
